If you can withstand the cold temps, fishing isn't too bad of an option right now. The Blue just bumped up to almost 100 CFS, which usually puts the fish into a feeding frenzy. I'd continue to throw tiny bugs - mysis shrimp and midges - in size #20 and #22. Like most everywhere else in the country, its been super cold here, so be sure to layer properly and don't overexpose yourself to the elements.

If you're in need of a warming trend, one of our guides, Shane Smith, moved to Costa Rica a couple of weeks ago to guide in the tropics for a few months. Check out the story below for more details. I recently talked to Shane and he was estatic about the fishing potential. They are about to hit their peak season and every captain is chomping at the bit each morning in anticipation of the proverbial cork to pop. Right now, boats are landing between 5 and 10 sails a day; however, once it really heats up it isn't unheard of to see triple digit numbers landed. This is definitely a fishery to be fished in your lifetime.

And, if you need an escape a little closer to home, you can always contact Captain Eric Hart of Red Eye Charters to book a Florida backcountry saltwater trip.

One of the shop’s most senior guides, Shane Smith, recently embarked on a Costa Rica fly fishing adventure. He will be hosting guided fly fishing trips on the western coast of Costa Rica in search of sailfish, marlin, tuna, dorado, roosterfish and more.

Shane is working on the Big Cookie, a 38ft Bertram with twin 350’s featuring an air-conditioned salon with DVD player and other amenities. Shane is partnered with “Boomer,” a local guide (“Tico”) with years of local experience. The boat is stationed in Quepos, but their port of call will be determined by the best fishing option.

The boat’s focus is on the fly; however, terminal tackle is available for gear-chuckers. Shane will provide all necessary gear and equipment or clients can bring their own.

Non-anglers will find almost limitless activities in Costa Rica including Eco and Zip Line tours, monkey preserves, butterfly farms and a lush jungle environment. The area is very family friendly and should pose no obstacles as far as traveling with a family. Trapper and his family visited Costa Rica over Thanksgiving and had only positive reviews.

If you are interested in fishing Costa Rica, this is a prime opportunity to fish with a familiar face – Shane. He will be in Latin America until the end of April. Interested parties can contact Shane via email (noodman@yahoo.com); however, if you are interested I recommend you book ASAP before the Big Cookie is reserved.
