Cutthroat Newsletter - 12/13/07

Happy Holidays! We've finally gotten some snow here in the high country. I was beginning to worry about another drought year, but I should know better than to worry this early. Copper Mountain has reported 26" of new snow in the past 7 days, so things are looking up.

One of our favorite things to do this time of year is called the "Ski n' Fish." Hit the slopes early before the new snow gets tracked out, and then go out hunting for fish feeding on midges as the weather warms in the afternoon.

Fishing is often day-to-day this time of year, but many of our guides and customers have been having successful outings on the Colorado, Williams Fork, and Blue Rivers. Midges in black or red have been the ticket on all three of these rivers.

Try not to get too rusty this winter. It's pretty hard to knock off in the spring. We're offering saltwater trips, float trips, wade trips, and fly tying classes throughout the winter, and spring guide school is right around the corner!

The ULTIMATE Christmas Gift

Pesca Maya Lodge boasts air-conditioned rooms, a restaurant with exquisite meals, full service bar, and a fly shop. The lodge also lies on a secluded white sand beach with a coral reef just 90 yards away, so don't forget your snorkel!

Ascension Bay and Boca-Paila are world famous flats that are home to Bonefish, Permit, Tarpon, Snook, Jacks, and Barracuda. This area offers exceptional fishing opportunities for the novice and experienced saltwater angler alike, and the guides are willing to cater to your experience level.

The guides at the lodge each have over 10 years of experience, and each boat will also be staffed with an apprentice guide to keep things running smoothly. Boats are Pangas with 40-50 hp engines and casting platforms.

You'll want to pack an 8-weight rod with a floating line and a good reel, as well as a selection of flies and leaders. We have all necessary equipment available at Cutthroat Anglers and we will be glad to help with any equipment needs. The fly shop at Pesca Maya will be able to provide last-minute necessities.

The Truth About Tony Danza

newsletter images

This one is for all of the loyal readers of our fishing reports. If you frequent our reports page, you may have noticed mention of the mythical "Tony Danza" fly. The truth of the matter is, it didn't exist...... until now.

You see, the Tony Danza has been thrown into the reports from time to time to keep our readers on their toes. Now's your chance to coin the Tony Danza Fly as your own.

newsletter image

Tie up YOUR OWN version of the Tony Danza and bring it in to the shop, mail it in, or send a high-res pic to anglers@fishcolorado.com. Here's my version, but we want to see yours! The flies will be reviewed by the staff, and the winner will receive $25 in fly tying materials from Cutthroat Anglers. The fly will also be featured in the next Cutthroat Anglers eNewsletter.

The rules are simple- there are none! Put something on a hook- freshwater, saltwater, warmwater, frog water, it doesn't matter. It's all about what Tony Danza means to you. Submissions are due by January 1, 2008. We're looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Brodin Ghost Nets
newsletter image

This is a great upgrade from the old mesh net. The bag is injection molded from clear PVC. When the net bag is put into water, it becomes translucent and is less likely to spook fish. PVC is less harmful to fish, allows for easier release, and is less likely to snag hooks. This is also the lightest net of its kind on the market. $99.95-$109.95
