What a strange water year! The Colorado at Kremmling has doubled in flow the past week and the Roaring Fork has cut in half. We're seeing drastic changes every day, but it seems when one river goes up, another drops. Despite the roller coaster ride, fishing has been good somewhere every day. Expect to have a great water year and things to level out in the near future.
There is just as much going on in the shop and with the staff as there is on the water. Andrew recently returned from a saltwater trip in the Caribbean, Chaz got back yesterday from fly fishing Quetico Provincial Park' Trapper is fishing in Alaska for the first time, Clint is getting ready for 6 weeks in Alaska, Shooter is living and fishing in Grand Cayman, Phil got married, and Barry is planning his departure to Montana.
If that's not enough, we're having one of the busiest years in Cutthroat Anglers history! Usually I plan on my schedule getting really busy in June, but this year my head has been spinning since March. Thanks for your support!
You walk into a fly shop early in the morning and are introduced to a bearded stranger who you're going to spend your day (and several hundred dollars) with. He's sizing you up, and you're doing the same to him. At this point, the day could be an experience of a lifetime or a total bust. Here are a few tips on making sure it's the former rather than the latter.
There are also a few things that you should expect from your guide. He should be on time, friendly, patient, knowledgeable on the river, and willing to do his best to meet your expectations.
At Cutthroat Anglers, we pride ourselves in our ability to build strong, long lasting relationships with our clients. Forming such relationships takes some effort from both the guide and the client.
Guide Phil Anagnost and his lovely bride, Miran, were married June 9 at the Copper Mountain Chapel. Any of you who know or have fished with Phil know Miran has her hands full now!
The wedding ceremony itself was quick and traditional, but the reception afterward was far from that. The highlight of the reception was a Korean Bowing Ceremony narrated by Phil's cousin, Jason.
During the ceremony, Phil had to prove his love and dedication to Miran's family by being beaten on the feet with dried fish and carrying Miran around the room on his back. Miran held a traditional cloth as the elder relatives tossed dates into it. This was not your typical game of hoops. Phil and Miran are to bear a child for each date that landed in the cloth. These two have a lot of work to do as the family landed a grand total of 38 dates...good luck on finding a babysitter!
After the ceremony, the food came out, the beer flowed freely, and the ensuing party was outstanding.
Phil plans to continue guiding in the summers while Miran begins her residency as a physician in Colorado Springs. We wish Phil and Miran the best and would like to thank them for a beautiful wedding, an amazing cultural experience, and one hell of a party. We're sure they will have a wonderful life together.
As many of you know, this weekend we will be hosting a troop benefit for soldiers returning to Fort Carson from overseas. We will be providing a day of free, guided private water, or float fishing for as many of these heroes as we can accommodate. It's the least we can do to say thank you.
We have been collecting donations of $45 per soldier in order to provide each soldier 12 flies and a Cutthroat Anglers ball cap. So far the amount of support we have received has been absolutely tremendous. We would like to say thanks to all who have donated so far and encourage anyone else interested to contact the shop and make a donation. Donations can be made by calling the shop at (970) 262-262-2878, Toll Free at 1-888-876-8818, or by email at (anglers@fiscolorado.com). Payments are accepted in the form of cash, check, or credit card.
Thanks for your support. We are greatly looking forward to this event. We are excited to provide this well-deserved, relaxing day on the water.
Tight Lines,
Chris Hall and Trapper Rudd
