Things are great in the shop this spring as many of our new and exciting ideas come to existence. With the launching of the new website and the busy season approaching, we are booking up much faster than usual. We strongly encourage you to book as much in advance as possible this year to confirm your guided trip. (Hint: June 21 to July 14 Roaring Fork Float.)

Green Drake Madness

Every year, the Green Drake Hatch on the Roaring Fork is one of the biggest events in the lives of our guides and clients. The hatch is right around the corner starting in mid-June and continuing through mid-July.

Trout go absolutely nuts for these meaty Mayflies, so if you haven't tried it, maybe this should be your year. This trip is always run as a float trip, and be sure to plan for a full day as the Fork is a little bit of a drive. Spots are going fast so be sure to book your spot ASAP.

I should also explain that the Drake hatch is not just a Drake hatch. It's really guide lingo for a smorgasbord of Green Drakes, Pale Morning Duns, Caddis, Yellow Sallies and Blue Winged Olives. There is no force-feeding here. These fish are looking to go big at the "all you can eat buffet". I certainly would not hesitate to put this hatch against any fishing event in the West. Sound like fun? Give us a call!

Trapper Rudd: Movie Star

Good news for the shop! Trapper has been selected to host a series of fly fishing DVDs for Fly Fish America Magazine. Trapper has also been given the title of Editor at Large.

The DVD series is, at this point, going to contain destinations such as Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Iceland, Alaska, and many others. Needless to say, Trapper will be racking up the Sky Miles. Trapper has recently returned from filming in Michigan for Great Lakes Steelhead and the Yucatan in Mexico for bonefish.

Trapper will be leaving this month for his first ever trip to Alaska to hopefully catch giant rainbows and King Salmon. Trapper says "Alaska has been a lower priority for me because I knew I would have to wear pants and shoes." The guides told him that the best way to attract the Rainbows is to tie a ham to his leg and walk the river banks until he finds them. We'll see how that goes. Go get'em Trap!

The DVD will be available at fly shops across the country upon completion.

Lake Dillon Fill and Spill

Lake Dillon is now full and water started spilling over the "Glory Hole" Tuesday afternoon. The "Glory Hole" serves as an overflow valve for the lake and channels the excess water into the Blue River in town. What this means to us as anglers is that warmer water from the top of the lake will make its way into the river, boosting water temps.

Generally the water in the river is bottom released from the dam providing constant, extremely cold water temps. During a fill and spill, the warmer water from the top mixes with the cooler water being released from the bottom resulting in ideal water temps for both trout and aquatic insects.

Water supplies in the Front Range are also quite strong this year, meaning that less water will be pulled from the lake for Denver's water supply this year. This equates to more water for the Blue, the Lower Blue, and the Colorado. After many recent drought years, the more than adequate water supply is a breath of fresh air for local anglers, boaters, bugs and trout.
