If you're like me when the Salmon flies start showing up on the Colorado my friends, coworkers, and family members start seeing me less, well it's that time of year again! The Salmonfly Nymphs have been identified quite a bit earlier this year which gives us the promise of adult Salmonflies very soon! Stop into the shop, pick up some stones, and avoid the mid summer crowds by getting on the water and chuckin those big ole bugs a little early this year! Salmonfly Nymphs aren't going to be your only tool if fishing the Colorado in the next couple weeks, like most rivers this time of year your generic nymph patterns are also going to serve useful for the next few weeks (well all year as you all know). Step it up a couple sizes this time of year and vary your coloring per. water visibility. Tungsten Teaser, Copper Johns, Two bit hookers, Prince nymphs , etc. should all be productive this time of year in sizes 18-14. On a low vis day consider throwing a red Copper John with a natural or flashback Pheasant tail as a trailer. On a clear day attach a more natural colored Nymph on top with a smaller similar nymph below, and always keep your midge box in mind when not getting hits on clear days.
Be on the lookout for numerous Mayfly hatches occurring when the cloud cover rolls in, while others are running for there trucks tie on an 18 or 20 BWO and collect fish while others are sitting in front of the t.v! Recommended flies- Stonefly (size 6) cb cdcs, Red Copper Johns, Prince Nymphs, Tungsten Teasers, Tungsten Pheasant tails, Black Copper Johns, etc. Sizes 18-14 Zebra midges, Rojo midges, Uv Emergers, Ju Ju bees, sizes 22 and 20 BWOs, Adams, Black Midges, sizes 18-22 -Sean Dailey
