Arkansas Headwaters to Granite - 03/23/07

Guides Rating: Guides Rating of 2 Stars
Streamflow at time of report: 232cfs

A recent drive-by on the way to Granite showed the Arkansas thawed in almost all exposed stretches. The flow should stay low and relatively clear until May when real run-off begins.

If it was up to me, I'd drive the extra 30-minutes to Salida for warmer water temps, higher flows and warmer air temps. I think you'll find more consistent fishing on the lower river.

If you're in a time crunch, you should find a few fish feeding on nymphs. Tie on a caddis pupa or stone fly nymph and trail it with a BWO. You might get lucky and find fish willing to rise to midges, but the bulk of hooked fish will succumb to nymphs. While not the best option, it won't see the massive crowds like the lower river.
