One of the best winter options around. Applicable to all winter fishing you will need to find deeper slow pockets of water as fish will not want to exert to much energy to feed in the faster sections like they do in the summer months. Expect to fish sub surface for the most part but be ready for top water fishing in the early afternoons on sunny days.
Bugs: Don’t get to hung up on specific patterns in winter fishing , concentrate more on size and color schemes. Always have an assortment of reds, blacks, and dark greens in sizes 22-26 (you can always go smaller if you can manage) For those of who want some specific patterns here are a few that work well for me in the winter months.
Ju Ju Bee in red or black especially on those blue bird days when fish will be looking for emerging bugs.
Cravens Poison Tung’s Charlie has tied a whole series of midges with 5/64 black tungsten bead heads. I’m not sure why no one has done this sooner. The whole goal of winter fishing is getting down deep and these flies do the job
Brassie Reds The first fly I ever tied and my go to winter pattern. Other red flies might work as well but I always seem to tie this on first and end up keeping it on for the whole day.
Pure Midges No flash, no fancy sparkle. Black and small, sometimes simple is better.
RS 2’s If I had to choose one pattern for the rest of my life it would be an RS2.
