The Granite area definitely plays the role of Cinderella in the Spring. All of the crowds focus on Salida and then Buena Vista, so while you might not find super hot action on the upper river, you should find the river all to yourself.
You're at a much higher elevation near Leadville, so both the weather and water temps are much cooler on average then Salida. The cooler environment means the hatch is much later. The Caddis hatch is very water temp sensitive, so don't expect to see adult Caddis near Granite simply because adults are dancing near Salida.
This stretch definitely isn't fishing as well as Salida, but its 45-minutes closer than Salida so if you're in a time crunch the upper river can prove a good option.
Tie on attractor nymphs. The go-to nymph setup is a #16 Caddis pupa followed by a #18-20 BWO nymph.
