Lake Dillon is at the highest level for April in the last 20 years. The Front Range's water base is also high, which means Denver won't be pulling all of our water into the Robert's Tunnel. Due to all of these factors, we predict a banner water year for the entire Blue River.
Be careful hiking in the canyon because ice and snow can be under any rock and create a slippery slide. The flow is perfect right now for wading and there are rarely crowds. You usually need some sun to warm up this canyon-lined tailwater, and you could see a hatch of either midges or Blue Winged Olives. There is also the chance at seeing a quick winter stonefly hatch, but don't go expecting total dry fly fishing. Nymphing is definitely going to be the most productive.
Fly selection includes: Egg patterns, Barr's BH Emerger, JuJu Baetis, Gidgets, BWO Triggers, Olive Baetis Nymph and San Juan Worms. Larger attractors include stonefly nymphs, Cased Caddis nymphs and TungTeasers.
This is a good option once runoff kicks into full gear. Be sure to avoid spawning beds!!
